Raise me up, 2023, White clay

This mask is inspired by the philosophy of Eternal Recurrence, which suggests that time repeats itself in an infinite loop throughout my life. I find myself reflecting on the karma and lessons that have unfolded in my life, contemplating whether life and the soul continue after the human body's demise. Will there be another phase of existence, forever looping, with a consciousness that persists, experiences, and learns anew? To represent this eternal recurrence, I have depicted a snake eating its tail to show encircling the mask.

I merge ancient pottery traditions with my personal philosophy by incorporating playful marks that reference both ancient pottery shapes and my ongoing reflection on the concept of penis envy. Stemming from Sigmund Freud's theories on female psychosexual development, penis envy is characterized by young girls experiencing anxiety upon realizing their lack of a penis. This realization is seen as a pivotal moment in the journey towards mature female sexuality. As an artist, I consider myself a continuous recording experiment, observing my own growth and contemplating this topic over time. The upper part of my work showcases a pattern influenced by traditional African styles, while also incorporating the concept of the third eye, symbolizing heightened perception. This element harmoniously intertwines with the playful figure, creating a multi-layered artistic expression.
